Over 25 years ago Andrew Hamilton launched the Nottingham Civic Society’s publishing adventure ‘Get to know Nottingham’ with the first three modestly produced A5 titles No.1 Nottingham’s Royal Castle, No.2 Nottingham’s Caves, and No.3 Historic Walks in Nottingham.

With the advantages of advances in colour printing and the Society’s greater assurance the publications are now more ambitious. Andrew led the way with latest edition of his book on Nottingham’s Royal Castle; now at A4 size, with more pages and some illustrations in colour.

Now his second book in the new series, Nottingham’s Caves, has been published. It has been worth the wait. The book is just what is wanted for those who know little about underground Nottingham. It is informative without being academic and is very well illustrated with engravings and photographs old and new. A useful feature is the plan showing some of caves of central Nottingham, with an indication of those that may be visited.

In the book Andrew separates the myths from reality and describes the various uses for which these caves were created – almost all being man-made. As the British Geological Survey has recorded at least 418 caves in the City it is remarkable how few are immediately apparent to the visitor or to many residents.

For those who are interested in a distinct aspect of Nottingham’s past or are intrigued by walking around a seemingly honeycombed city centre this book is certainly recommended. At £3.50 it is surely not just a bargain for yourself but an excellent present for your friends.

You can purchase a copy of this publication from the Society.
