Founded
in 1962 to fight for conservation and
good planning in Nottingham, The Nottingham
Civic Society runs many other activities including
lectures, tours & visits. We take a great interest in our City past, present
& future.
We are a totally independent and non-political body. We actively monitor planning and development in Nottingham and where we feel it is appropriate or necessary we raise awareness of issues. We have given evidence at a number of Public Inquiries and continue to take a firm line on many important planning matters.
Development &
Conservation
Nottingham is experiencing a vast amount of regeneration
at present. It is our aim to make sure that new developments are of the
highest possible quality and that developers are made aware of the issues
surrounding their schemes. Good design is only possible through a full understanding
of any scheme's environmental and urban context. We have been active in
promoting the waterside regeneration of the River Trent. This is now becoming
a major part of the city's future development proposals.
We helped to safeguard many listed buildings from demolition or neglect.
On occasion we have even funded and carried through their restoration for
the future benefit of Nottingham. Our Recording Group
is also making a photographic record of historic buildings at risk throughout
the city.
We run an awards scheme called 'Mark of the Month', which each month commends either a new building, a refurbishment, a restoration or adaptation, or a project of environmental enhancement. We are also actively involved in the Lord Mayor's Award Scheme for Urban Design.
Activities
We organise a regular and comprehensive series of guided
walks in and around historic Nottingham and run a very full programme of
Members' Meetings with outstanding guest speakers. We also have a series
of visits to other Civic Societies and places of interest nationally.
We have a group, 'The Spirit of Nottingham' which seeks to aid local amenity and voluntary groups by providing seminars and information on a range of marketing and fundraising issues.
Many of our members are co-opted into or represent the society in a vast and varied range of committees of other organisations.
Publications
Members receive a lively and informative Newsletter three
times a year, recognised nationally as an excellent example of Civic Trust
literature. We also market a range of books, pamphlets and maps related
to Nottingham.
